Center for Languages and Translation

   The Centre for Languages and Translation (CLT) of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences was founded in 1996 in Mansourieh and relocated to New Rawda in 2000. It is a numerus clausus center that awards four BAs and seven Master’s degrees:

 

1- BAs degrees (180 credits; bac+3):

a- BA in Translation

b- BA in Applied Living Languages – Italian Language

c- BA in Applied Living Languages – Spanish Language

d- BA in Applied Living Languages – Chinese Language 

 

2- Master’s degrees (120 credits; bac+5):

a- Research Master in Translation Studies

b- Professional Master in Specialized Translation

c- Professional Master in Interpreting

d- Professional Master in Applied Living Languages –  Arabic as Foreign and Applied Language

e- Professional Master in Applied Living Languages –  International Commercial Negotiation

f- Research Master in Applied Living Languages – Intercultural Communication: Italian Studies

g- Research Master in Applied Living Languages – Intercultural Communication: Spanish Studies

 

The student has to pass an entrance exam in Arabic, French and English, to be enrolled in the first year of the BA program. Each BA program is governed by its own specific admission rules.

 

Overall Organization of Studies:

Each academic year is divided into two semesters, each spanning 15 weeks, of which 12 weeks and a half are actual teaching.

1- BA and Master in Translation and Interpretation

Objectives:

Graduating professional translators and interpreters capable of meeting the needs of the market in all domains of general and specialized translation.

Fields of Employment:

- Public functions: Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Information, Justice, Parliament, security forces…

- The services sector: tourism, banks, trade, industry…

- Information sector: press agencies, advertisements, audiovisual media, publishing houses, written and electronic press…

- Education sector: schools, specialized institutes, universities, teaching centers…

- International organizations and multinational companies.

- Sworn translation and freelance translation.

- Copywriting.

- Conference interpretation.

 

2- BA and Master in Applied Living Languages:

Objectives:

With the globalization, modern enterprises seek trained staff, prepared to handle the linguistic, cultural, legal and social needs of the new global economy. The globalization of relations and markets mean the rise of a new profile of managers, capable of mastering many foreign languages, communicating, leading negotiations, and managing projects while respecting and acknowledging the identity of others.

a- Fields of employment for the Master in Intercultural Communication (Italian or Spanish option):

- Education sector: schools, specialized institutes, universities, teaching centers…

- Information sector: press agencies, advertisements, audiovisual media, publishing houses, written and electronic press…

- Organization of cultural and artistic events.

- Translation from language A into Arabic.

- Communication and public relations services in international enterprises and organizations.

 

b- Fields of employment for the Master in International Commercial Negotiations:

- Negotiations advisor in the private sector (commercial chamber, banks, insurance companies…)

- Managing international projects.

- Senior or middle staff in the following domains: import and export, contract negotiations, marketing, commercial and client research, public relations, organization of cultural, commercial and social events…

 

c- Fields of employment for the Master in Arabic as Foreign and Applied Language

Arabic as Foreign Language Option:

- Teaching Arabic to foreigners in general and to Lebanese and Arab emigrants, in Lebanon as well as abroad.

Arabic as Applied Language Option:

- Arabic trainer for a specific objective in on-going training, in banks, companies, the public sector, press agencies…

- Editor in specialized sections in written and audiovisual media.
