Students of the FMS carry out a health and mental health initiative to assist displaced persons

Last March, students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences carried out a series of humanitarian and health activities at several shelters for displaced persons, in coordination with the Primary Health Care Center—Emir Majid Arslan Medical Center—and under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Health and Dr. Inam Nasrallah, Head of the Quality Department at the faculty.

The initiative included shelters at Chouaifet El Aamroussieh Mixed School, the Choueifat Municipality Cultural Center, Biel—Beirut Waterfront, and Martyrs’ Square in downtown Beirut.

The initiative included organized fieldwork aimed at monitoring the health conditions of displaced persons and identifying their basic needs, thereby contributing to enhancing the effectiveness of the health and humanitarian response within the shelters.

Available chronic medications were distributed to patients, and cases requiring medical evaluation were referred to a specialist, following the creation of a detailed medical file for each patient.

The efforts of the team were not limited to the therapeutic aspect but also encompassed the humanitarian and social dimensions, including efforts to secure basic necessities for children such as milk and essential supplies. The volunteer team conducted organized screenings for the early detection of malnutrition among children under five and pregnant women, given the careful care and special attention these groups require.

To raise awareness and provide support, volunteers supplied displaced persons with hotline numbers for the Ministry of Public Health and hospitals offering free services, while also providing effective moral and psychological support aimed at alleviating the harsh conditions they are enduring.

Through this initiative, the Faculty of Medical Sciences reaffirms its commitment to the values of community service and its ongoing dedication to meeting its needs and enhancing its positive impact.
