Under the patronage of the Minister of Public Health. Dr. Jamil Jabak, the 10th edition of the GABRIEL network’s international meeting co-organized with the Mérieux Foundation, the Lebanese University and Saint Joseph University of Beirut, was held with the participation of several entities and research teams from Europe, America, Asia and Africa.
The conference, which took place from June 17-20, 2019, brought together 68 participants and 36 speakers from 20 countries and provided an opportunity to discuss the “Hot Topics in Infectious Diseases”.
At the opening ceremony, the Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, Dr. Nina Saadallah Zeidan delivered the speech of the President of the Lebanese University Prof. Fouad Ayoub. Dr. Zeidan stressed the importance of such international scientific meetings and the support of the Lebanese University thereto. She also emphasized the importance of the topics discussed and the danger of outbreaks of communicable and infectious diseases, in light of the repercussions of the migration and asylum witnessed in the region.
Dr. Zeidan pointed to the leading role of the Lebanese University and the Faculty of Public Health and its research laboratories. She presented the activities of these laboratories, including the Laboratory of Microbiology of Health and Environment, which contributes through national studies and PhD projects conducted in cooperation with many international research entities, including the Gabriel Network. Dr. Zeidan pointed that the national cooperation with Saint Joseph University and the international cooperation with the Gabriel Network and Mérieux Foundation is a benefit to our educational and research endeavors, and assists in the adoption of multilateral collective approaches to exchange knowledge and expertise.
Dr. Zeidan thanked the Mérieux Foundation and the organizing committee for gathering and supporting research teams from Lebanon and abroad. She stated that the selection of Beirut to host the 10th edition of the meeting is a sincere reflection of friendship and cooperation. At the end of the speech, Dr. Zeidan conveyed the greetings of Prof. Fouad Ayoub to the participants.
The Laboratory of Microbiology of Health and Environment at the Lebanese University, which has officially joined the Gabriel Network since the beginning of 2017, participated actively in the meeting’s work. The head of the laboratory, Dr. Monzer Hamza, presented a national study on tuberculosis conducted in collaboration with local and international partners. The laboratory student Reem Bayaa also presented the preliminary results of the study conducted jointly with the Mérieux Foundation lab in Lyon - France.
At the end, the lab graduate Dr. Ranin Bechara and PhD student Hiba Al Meer participated along many international competitors in the competition for the Best Research Award. Dr. Bechara received the first prize and the compliment of the Examining Committee and the president of the Mérieux Foundation Mr. Alain Mérieux.
