6/3/2019 - UNICEF Lebanon and Generation Unlimited - empowering a young generation – Ibrahim’s story

The youth have so much to offer our country and only need to be given a chance to prove it. Everything I've seen here this weekend demonstrates the creativity and ambition of my generation.”

Simon Balsom

Ibrahim, 22, from Beirut

Studying pharmacy at the Lebanese University, Twenty two years old Ibrahim from Beirut is already looking to his future. Having watched his brother graduate and then fail to find work, he's focusing on the issues that currently prevent employers from connecting with their ideal employees. Introduced to the weekend's workshop by his student council, he's bubbling with creative ideas to improve the opportunities of Lebanon's job-seeking youth.

When looking for work, most professional and qualified people turn to LinkedIn and similar international apps. There’s no doubt these represent a great model for connecting people, but they rarely address issues that companies and potential employees face here in Lebanon. The most basic of these is the question of trust.

This weekend we’re working on an app that addresses the local labor market specifically. Searching for work can be an endless round of sending off CVs and chasing vaguely described job advertisements. We’re heading into 2019 – there must be a better way!

Even when delivering a CV, we've noticed there's often a question of trust involved. Currently, it is too easy for someone to overinflate academic achievements – to put it bluntly, lie about their degree. So, our app will be linked via the student's college id and confirm their academic record. We'll also follow up with both company and applicant to ensure fairness and transparency was observed all around.

By democratizing the job market, and by clearing the route to honesty from both sides, we feel that the risk of engaging the youth is reduced. We’ll also provide a link between the youth and training opportunities – opportunities much like the one we’re attending this weekend. We were lucky to hear about it, but why shouldn’t everyone be able to apply to benefit?

We have so much to offer our country and only need to be given a chance to prove it. Our app and other ideas I've seen here this weekend demonstrate the creativity and ambition of my generation. We're still growing, we're still hungry for knowledge, and we've got the energy to work hard and see projects through to their exciting conclusion. We're not easily dissuaded by obstacles, and when someone tells us ‘it can’t be done because it’s never been done before’ that gives us even more strength to prove ourselves to them.

Through these three days, we haven't set Lebanon on a new path, but we've learned how to plan, we’ve learned how to identify a problem and dig through to its source. We’ve learned how to think critically. Our experience here has made our plan for a job search and networking app clearer and, excitingly, highlighted just how important this could be to the future of youth in Lebanon.
